Background of the study

Legal documents, particularly court transcripts, are characterized by complex semantic layers that convey nuanced meaning essential for justice and legal interpretation. In Nigeria, the legal system reflects a confluence of indigenous legal traditions and Western jurisprudence, resulting in multifaceted language use. This study evaluates the semantic layers present in Nigerian legal documents by analyzing court transcripts. The research explores how legal language employs multiple levels of meaning through technical vocabulary, rhetorical devices, and contextual markers that shape legal outcomes (Chinwe, 2023; Adewale, 2024). Detailed discourse analysis of transcripts will reveal how ambiguity, metaphor, and emphasis are used to structure arguments and influence judicial decision-making. By mapping these semantic networks, the study seeks to contribute to a clearer understanding of legal reasoning and promote transparency in legal communication. The investigation further considers how semantic complexity affects the accessibility of legal language to laypersons, thereby impacting public trust in the legal system.

Statement of the problem

Despite the importance of clear legal communication, there is limited research on the semantic complexity of Nigerian court transcripts. The multilayered nature of legal language may lead to misinterpretation or confusion among non-specialist audiences, undermining justice and transparency (Chinwe, 2023). This research gap restricts efforts to simplify and standardize legal language for improved public understanding and effective legal practice.

Objectives of the study:

• To identify semantic layers in Nigerian court transcripts.

• To analyze how these layers affect legal interpretation.

• To propose strategies for enhancing clarity in legal documents.

Research questions:

• What semantic structures are present in court transcripts?

• How do they influence judicial interpretation?

• What measures can improve legal language clarity?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it deciphers the semantic intricacies of Nigerian legal language, providing insights that can enhance legal transparency and accessibility. The findings will support legal practitioners and policymakers in refining language use in the judicial system (Adewale, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study is confined to the analysis of semantic layers in Nigerian court transcripts and does not include other legal texts.

Definitions of terms:

• Semantic Layers: Multiple levels of meaning within a text.

• Legal Documents: Official texts used in legal proceedings.

• Court Transcripts: Written records of courtroom proceedings.
